Pop quiz! When does a roller coaster stop being fun? The answer? When it's your own roller coaster of dieting! We've all done it - losing ten pounds in one month, only to gain fifteen the next. You've tried Atkins, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and nothing has worked. Well, I'm here to tell you that there is a better way to lose weight, and it's a lot simpler than you may think. The easiest way to achieve permanent weight loss is to simply form three basic healthy habits.
But before I reveal these easy habits, I want to discuss three basic principles that are necessary to create permanent change in your life.
Principle 1: If You Want Different Results, You Have To Take Different Actions
I believe Albert Einstein said it best when he said, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." When you think about it, using the same principles that have failed you over and over to try to lose weight really is a pretty insane thing to do.
So, forget about jumping on the next great diet bandwagon. The best solution is usually the simple one that is most often overlooked. If you think about it logically, short-term starvation can only possibly lead to short-term loss of weight. You may think that if you can just lose the weight, you'll be able to adjust your way of life and keep it off. One of the flaws in that plan is that you starve yourself so much in the process that the diet is followed by a period of binge eating that simply piles the weight back on. The other problem is that after a successful diet you haven't developed a new way of eating, so you simply fall back into your old habits. The result of this is that you lose a few pounds, and then you gain those pounds back plus a few extra. The bottom line is, before you start your weight loss program this time, remember what Einstein said, and don't be insane.
Principle 2: You Have To Make A Choice.
Do you understand just how much power you have when it comes to making choices about your body? You need to understand that you aren't trapped in any kind of cycle, but rather you have the ability to choose your own way no matter what your circumstances are today. You can choose right now to make changes that will help you lose weight, feel great and live life at a higher level.
Let's quickly prove this with two quick questions:
Do you think that you could develop some new habits over the next few weeks or months that would help you GAIN weight and make your health WORSE than it is right now?
Do you think that you could develop some new habits over the next few weeks or months that would help you LOSE weight and make your health BETTER than it is right now?
Of course, the answer to both of these questions is yes! The true beauty of this situation is that the choice is 100% up to you.
Principle 3: Above All, Humans Are Creatures Of Habit
I'm sure you've heard that term before. Unfortunately, being creatures of habit means that we can develop bad habits just as quickly and easily, and sometimes more quickly and easily, as we develop good ones. Fortunately, the key to improving your health, work, and relationships lies in developing good life habits.
"Motivation is what gets you going, but only habits are what keep you going."
Ok, now, let's finally go over those healthy habits that you're going to want to develop:
1. Eat Twice As Many Meals As Usual.
This plan is looking better already, isn't it? Well, don't get too excited before you read habit number two. Eating five to six small meals/snacks a day is recommended for all chronic diseases, and it is by far the best program for people who want to lose weight. Doing this helps keep your metabolism working all day, your blood sugar levels consistent, and it also prevents you from ever getting that starving feeling.
2. Only Eat Half As Much As Usual
Our bodies naturally tell us when we are full. We just need to learn to listen. Many times we continue eating long after we are full simply because there is food on the plate. The best way to combat that is to put half the food you would normally put on your plate and eating it more slowly. Just developing this habit alone will surprise you at how completely satisfied and full you will start to feel. If you are eating out, simply ask your server to bring you half of your order in a to go box so you can have it later. Then you can finish your plate like you were taught and have more for later.
3. Drink Six to Eight Glasses of Water Each Day
Drinking more water is probably the hardest habit to develop... and one of the most essential. With so many competing beverages to tempt us, water just seems boring. The human body at any one time contains between 55 and 78% water. Your body needs a certain intake of water to function and avoid dehydration. We get water from many things, including food. If you are not drinking enough water, your body tells you to get more... and if more water comes from food than from actually drinking it, your body will naturally ask for food when it actually needs water.
A study at the University of Washington found that when people drank a glass of water when they were hungry between their meals, almost 100% of the time it satisfied their hunger. Drinking more water also prevents you from putting unwanted and unneeded beverage calories into your system.
Losing weight for life isn't rocket science, but it does take the formation of some simple and effective habits. Develop the three simple habits above, and get off the weight loss roller coaster for good!
